HURTS

Synth-Pop, New Wave, Manchester

Listen! This is totaly great! HURTS has been rapidly getting the attention of many music enthusiasts. They come from the home of Joy Division, Manchester and they are in the final stages with their debut album. The video to Hurt's debut single, Wonderful Life, is so gloriously sombre and monochrome, it's almost obscene, although frankly, up here, we could weep with joy. The angular haircuts, the savage cheekbones, the darkly lit black-and-white setting, the pained stares into the middle distance, it reeks of eau d'1983 – the year when half-remembered bands with names like the Lotus Eaters, It's Immaterial and Pale Fountains took the shaved-sideboards-and-suits look of post-punk into the mainstream. The song itself is surgingly sad synth-pop, with a mysterious lyric whose optimistic chorus ("Never give up, it's such a wonderful life") contrasts with the dour verses, filled with references to crying and rain.

Artery

Post-Punk, British

Sheffield's Artery are a band who could have been huge, but, despite their innovative and thrilling records and visceral live performances, their place in the post-punk movement was all but ignored throughout their seven-year career. They split in 1985, but regrouped in 2007 at the behest of Jarvis Cocker, a fan since their early days, to play the Meltdown festival which he was curating, and last month played London's Dice Club to an ecstatic reception.

Death in the Afternoon

Indie, Swedish

Death in the afternoon started out as a 2 piece project of Christian & Linda. Recording songs in our apartment with all the junk we have collected over the years.. After a while we became a quartet with David & Albin joining us. We like cool guitar & bass lines, and drum machines that make you wanna dance. We enjoy recording, and that is a never ending project that we still do in our apartment.

Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire

Indie, Australian

One of the more obtuse bands coming out of Adelaide is Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! who sound like At The Drive-In, Circa Survive and The Mars Volta are wrapped up in a highly combustible package that, upon explosion, you can’t help but dance to.
A handful of self-released EPs have been committed to the annals of the Fire boys, and a new bun is cooking in the oven as we speak. The highly pitch-shifted first crumb from their forthcoming album is ‘War Coward’, a tasty offering that foregoes the usual verse-chorus-verse shtick and adapts a more cyclical format, ebbing and flowing rather than adhering to any set structure. Definitely a grower.

BEAT!BEAT!BEAT!

Indie-Rock, Electronic, German, Foals

Here are two exciting Remixes for you. Enjoy.

Leggins

Indie-Rock, New Wave, Psychedelic, Italy

Fresh new music from Italy. Leggins are not a female pop group wearing Leggins or something else you could imagine. This is a really good Indie-Rock Band. Perhaps you could say they sound a bit like the young Arctic Monkeys or Libertines. At the moment they are recording their first album. This is a Pre-Album Version. Enjoy.

The Sunday Reeds

Post-Punk, Psychedelic, Rock, Australian

The Sunday Reeds are a female-fronted noise pop/rock band named after Melbourne patron of the arts Sunday Reed. The love-child of some kind of rock 'n' roll orgy between The Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, The Ramones and The Velvet Underground. Driving bass lines, plenty of guitar feedback, primitive pounding rock beats and alto, sex-laden female vocals. If Nico had joined The Ramones, strapped on a bass guitar, and a whole lot more noise was added, this is how it might have sounded. After spending much time songwriting and recording in a hell-hole apartment, founding members Romana Ashton and Drew Jones were joined in early 2009 by drummer Andy Dawson. And then there were three... The Sunday Reeds' debut album 'Drowning in History' is out now through Squirrel Records and also available from amazon.com and cargorecords.co.uk

Red Drapes

New Wave, Post Punk, Shoegaze

Adam Heron, Thomas Walker, George Latham and Riley Difford are the RED DRAPES. They come from Great Britain and their music is really psychedelic, not that hard but always with a good atmosphere and a memorable voice. This is no trash indie band, they make quite mature music. Now they are in studio, recording some songs and till christmas they want to release their first EP.

Red Drapes formed in the fall of 2008, and made creative use of a derelict pub in Camberwell, South London. Bearing an extremely cold winter songs began to write themselves from influence of past cities and London.

Men Should Brothers Be

Indie, German

Men Should Brothers Be sind vier Jungs und ein Mädchen aus der sächsischen Kleinstadt Riesa aber Sie klingen so gar nicht nach Dorf, Einöde oder Langeweile. Ihre Debüt-EP “Citing Awesome People Without Being Awesome Too” ist im April diesen Jahres erschienen. Darauf finden sich fünf sehr gut tanzbare, sommerliche Britpop-Songs. England mögen sie ja sowieso, haben sie doch ihren Bandnamen aus der britischen Nationalhymne geklaut und dementsprechend klingen sie auch so. Very british. Tanzbare Rhythmen, eingängiger Gesang, schöne Melodien.

(((S)))
